Roof geometry sets the difficulty
Every place a roof edge dies into a wall is a leak waiting to be detailed correctly. Complicated rooflines create more of these junctions.
A designer who understands this will minimize them or make sure each one gets proper kickout flashing. It is far cheaper to draw a better junction than to fix a wet wall later.
Overhangs earn their cost
Deep eaves keep rain off walls. Flush walls with no overhang take the full load of wind driven rain.
This is not a style rule. It is a durability trade. If the design calls for minimal overhangs, the wall detailing needs to be that much better.
Insulation and the wall assembly
Where the insulation sits changes how the wall dries. Continuous exterior insulation under stucco improves energy performance and shifts where condensation can form.
This has to be decided as a system, not as separate choices by separate trades. The Department of Energy guidance on new home insulation is clear on the order. Air sealing and moisture control come first, then insulation. The same logic applies to what goes on top of it.
Sequencing is where builds go wrong
Windows have to be flashed before lath goes up. Weep screed has to be set at the right height before grading is finalized. Roof edges have to be flashed before the wall is closed.
Each of those is a different trade, and each one depends on the last one being done right. Nobody notices a missed step until years later.
Bring the stucco contractor in early
The most useful thing a plaster contractor does on a new build happens before they mix anything. Walking the framing, checking flashing, and flagging junctions costs almost nothing at that stage.

Questions worth asking your builder
How is each roof to wall junction flashed? What is the water barrier and how many layers? How much clearance is planned between finished grade and the bottom of the stucco?

Budget and schedule realities
Stucco is not the last trade on site, and treating it that way causes problems. It needs dry conditions, cure time between coats, and access before landscaping goes in.
Cold weather is the usual schedule killer. Cement plaster needs temperatures above freezing while it cures, which narrows the window in a lot of the country.
Warranties are only as good as the details
Material warranties cover the product. They do not cover water that got in through a flashing detail nobody installed.
Ask what the workmanship warranty covers, how long it runs, and what voids it. Get it in writing with the contract, not after.
